UN-4.2 Testing

UN-4 criteria govern self-heating behavior, packaging, labeling, and transport of bio-based solids. UN class 4 tests under “Manual of Tests and Criteria” (8th revised edition, 2023) , [section 4.2], applies to substances classified as “self heating”

The data collected classifies a material as SELF HEATING or NON-SELF HEATING, and is essential for assigning the correct UN number/class, packing materials safely, and complying with regulations like SDS, IMDG and ADR. Without it, shippers and producers risk misclassification, fines, delays, or potentially dangerous transport and storage incidents.

Different processes, temperatures, materials and operating conditions can change a materials classification level. A change of 10 degrees C during the production of biochar could drastically alter shipping requirements and leave the manufacturer liable if the SDS or shipping documents are not up to date.

How confident are you in the information on your SDS or MSDS ?

A detailed photographic still life of three distinct sample containers aligned on a matte black lab surface: a small stainless-steel canister, a square, heavy-duty fiberboard box, and a robust plastic drum, each with bold, non-text geometric hazard symbols to suggest regulatory markings. Next to them, compact thermal probes and a sleek handheld data logger emphasize testing and classification. The background is a softly out-of-focus wall of industrial shelving with additional anonymous containers, hinting at logistics and shipping. Neutral, diffused lab lighting from above and slightly behind creates subtle highlights on the container rims and clean shadows. Shot at eye level with a shallow depth of field, the mood is authoritative and methodical, suggesting UN-4 compliance evaluation for transport safety.

Our UN-4.2 Testing Methodology

ThermaSure Labs testing is carried out in strict accordance with the UN 4 Manual of Tests and Criteria, 8th revised edition, 2023. this document define specific requirements for isothermal forced convection oven testing, specific construction of crucibles, and scaled bulk trials to characterize self-heating and auto-ignition of torrefied materials and biochar. We are committed to delivering reproducible data, clear classifications, and defensible documentation for producers, regulators, insurers, and shippers.

A wide, photographic shot of a modern testing control room overlooking a separated, glass-walled high-temperature lab area. In the foreground, multiple ultra-wide computer displays show abstract, colorful thermal profiles, risk matrices, and time–temperature curves without readable text. Through the safety glass, several automated test rigs handle sealed containers of torrefied material and biochar in a controlled environment. Cool white overhead lighting mixes with subtle blue accent lights from the monitoring equipment, creating a calm, high-tech atmosphere. Captured from a slightly elevated angle with balanced composition, sharp focus across the scene, and a clean, modern aesthetic emphasizing professional risk assessment for material producers, insurers, and shipping professionals.
